Vermont Heavy Timber is not your average construction company
Founded in 2014 by Vermonter and timber framing devotee Miles Jenness, Vermont Heavy Timber is a construction company that values work done right. Operating from a shop in Huntington, VT, and using local lumber, Vermont Heavy Timber is a homegrown, hard working, team of craftspeople, rooted in historical and sustainable practices.
No two timber frames are exactly alike, and our work centers around the time it takes to learn and understand the materials and components of the original buildings. Our practice is to ensure that frames are repaired to complement the original structure, using the same methods and materials that the first builders would have used. We prioritize repairs and builds that are going to be right for the building and for the planet.
We pride ourselves on our company culture. At every level, we focus on respect for ourselves, for each other, for our materials and for our clients. As a company, we are constantly striving to improve in our field. As employees, we work to create a welcoming and respectful environment for every person we work with.
VTHT was founded by Miles Jenness, a born and raised Vermonter and son of a cabinet maker. Miles began his training in timber framing in 2008 before starting Vermont Heavy Timber in 2014. Miles is recognized as an expert in the field, with vast experience in the restoration and preservation of legacy buildings, ranging from iconic Vermont landmarks to the repair of Notre-Dame in Paris, France. When Miles is not on-site with the team, he can be found teaching workshops in Europe, in his role as the Bridge Watch Director of the Vermont Covered Bridge Society, or spending time with his wife and dog in the mountains.
What We Believe:
Construction is a historically male dominated field, and Vermont is a historically white state. These factors can make people feel unsafe or unwelcome in our industry, and we at Vermont Heavy Timber are committed to actively working against seen and unseen prejudicial influences.
Vermont Heavy Timber is not your average construction crew. Through staff communication, equitable hiring practices, upfront DEI statements, and advocacy for our employees, we hold each other, our clients, our job site practices, and other contractors to the highest standards when it comes to respect, fairness, and equity. We will eagerly hire people who are not men, LGBTQIIA+ people, people of color, people with histories of convictions, people with disabilities, people with child or elder care responsibilities, and other people who are less advantaged. Beyond our hiring practices, we also foster and enforce a working environment where all people feel physically and psychologically safe. At VTHT we recognize that those we spend our workdays with are just as important as the work that we do.
Work With Us
At VTHT we work as a team, while also supporting our employees in what they’re good at. Experience in timber framing is not required, but some knowledge of woodworking and carpentry is important. We’re rooted in education, and we’re passionate about the art of timber framing, both in new builds and in preservation.
We’re also deeply committed to diversity. We actively encourage and seek out women, non-binary, POC, LGBTQIA+, non-white and non-white cis het to apply. We’re ready to work with new people, support people in the trades, and make feasible accommodations for people with disabilities, or child or elder care needs.
We are always looking for the right person.
