Mastering Craftsmanship

New England’s architectural heritage is built on timber frames.

At Vermont Heavy Timber, we honor this legacy by blending traditional craftsmanship with modern construction practices. Our approach restores timber frames using the same methods and materials as the original builders, restoring both structural integrity and historical authenticity. Whether preserving a historic structure or constructing a new one, we prioritize techniques and materials that are best for the building—and for the planet.

With expertise in traditional timber framing, sustainable timber harvesting, and modern heavy machinery, we can restore any frame, relocate any structure, and raise any barn with precision and care.

  • The first step to engaging in work on a historic timber frame is to understand it. Each building and every component of it are unique, and prior to bringing in any tools or repairs, it is important to holistically understand the how the building was made, how it has been used, and its' history. A Conditions Assessment from Vermont Heavy Timber is a no-commitment way to understand the current state of your structure and how to best protect and preserve it moving forward. A member of our team will do a top to bottom assessment of the current state of your structure, the history of use, construction and renovation, and a breakdown of the repairs needed with a Vermont Heavy Timber bid price.

  • VTHT specializes in all aspects of timber frame restoration and preservation with a focus on timber trusses, specifically covered bridges and truss roof buildings such as churches and meeting houses. We have worked on projects as diverse as the restoration of the roof system of Notre Dame, windmills in Estonia, and some of the largest wooden clear span structures in the world. We delight most in the preservation of vernacular timber frame structures. We have a deep breadth of experience enacting traditional repairs and working to the standards of the Secretary of the Interior.

  • A timber frame opens the door to designs that are not possible with modern stick framing. Our structures are built sustainably with New England lumber, milled specifically for each new frame. We work with our clients from design to installation to create your dream barn, cabin, home, or space. After we cut your frame in our shop in Huntington, VT, we arrive to deliver, install and erect your new structure.

  • Vermont Heavy Timber specializes in the structure of historic buildings, and sometimes those structures are ready for work before you are. We are always available for emergency shoring for buildings that are on the brink. Whether the damage is from a natural disaster, or simply the impact of time, we can provide structural support measures that will ensure the building is not damaged further, and is safe to work on moving forward.

  • Buildings are more than just their frames, and restoration often means more than just being structurally sound. When working with Vermont Heavy Timber on a restoration project, we are available to help navigate the overall project as project managers and general contractors. With so many experienced members of our team, we have a vast network of skills and fellow contractors to complete work beyond the frame.
